UN Secretary General Ban Ki- Moon hails President Ben Ali's initiative to boost world solidarity
May 17th, 2008 --The United Nations Secretary General, Mr Ban Ki –Moon, voiced his support to President Ben Ali's call, inviting the international community to promote its contribution to world solidarity, by taking off one dollar per oil barrel, to allocate it to the World Solidarity Fund.
The Tunisian President issued his call during a toast given in honor of French President Mr Nicolas Sarkozy who paid a three- day State visit to Tunisia , in April.
On that occasion, President Ben Ali invited “oil rich nations to contribute to the World Solidarity Fund in order to protect humanity against the risks of rising hydrocarbon and basic food prices, by allocating one dollar per oil barrel to the Fund”.
The UN Secretary General made the statement during a meeting with Tunisia 's permanent representative to the UN, in New York .
Mr Ban Ki-Moon noted that the creation of the World Solidarity Fund in 2002, and its backing by the 2005 World Summit, testified to President Ben Ali's judicious vision and clear-sightedness, insofar as developments on the international scene are concerned.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to multiply efforts of all the parties and international organizations, in order to implement President Ben Ali's initiative.
In a related event, and within the intensification of steps to support this initiative, the president of the “Group 77” , in addition to China and the Movement of the non- aligned peoples, also hailed President Ben Ali's initiative, stressing the need to put it into practise.
The World Solidarity Fund was set up in 2002, following an initiative of the Tunisian President, who called for its creation in 1999.
The World Solidarity Fund is directly inspired from Tunisia 's own National Solidarity Fund, (FSN), also known as 26-26, following its postal account money order number.
The Fund has significantly contributed to integrating the poorest segment of Tunisia 's population into the country's social and economic life, by building housing, schools and providing people in need with basic amenities and infrastructure.
