The module seeks to provide an historical, authorized and social understanding of the police, one of the key social and legal institutions of the trendy state. The police are an integral a part of the legal justice system and as such, this module is a core factor in a felony justice programme. A important theme of this programme of research is to develop understanding of the relation of concepts in philosophy of legislation to a wider scholarship that features historical and sociological understandings of authorized practices. The module makes use of the tools of analytic philosophy to be able to promote understanding and criticism of present and historic understandings of law and legal follow, and to promote students’ own crucial, reflective understandings regarding these matters.
The function of the module is to allow students to critically interact with the International Society (or “English School”) approach to International Relations. Combining political concept, IR principle, philosophy, sociology, and history this approach seeks to understand the idea and apply of worldwide politics by reference to the historic development of relations between massive scale political entities (from empires, hordes, kingdoms, to the modern nation-state and past) and the discourses which have emerged (Machiavellian, Grotian, Kantian) in response to the development of first European international society and finally world society.
